SAN DIEGO – August 26, 2008 – Curious about the value of that inherited painting? Wonder if Aunt Edna’s mermaid lamp has any redeeming value? Find out if you have a hidden treasure – while helping San Diego’s lost and abandoned cats and dogs – at Friends of County Animal Shelters’ (FOCAS) “Hidden Treasures” event.
Held Saturday, Oct. 18 from 11 am-3 pm at Saint James by the Sea Church Hall in La Jolla, Hidden Treasures is an “Antiques Roadshow”-style event featuring appraisers from the esteemed Bonhams & Butterfields Auction House who will evaluate and appraise attendees’ collectibles. All proceeds benefit FOCAS.
“Many people have items in their homes that are quite valuable, but they don’t know it,” said FOCAS President Ann Elise Ryder, “At this event, they will uncover the value of their hidden treasures while helping the hidden treasures of the animal world.”
FOCAS is dedicated to giving second chances to animals within the San Diego County shelters that otherwise may have no hope at all. Whether it be an illness that needs medication or a broken leg that needs time to heal, FOCAS uses its energy and resources to help the "hidden treasures" that need a little extra TLC before they can find their forever home.
Admission to Hidden Treasures is $15 for appraisal of one item, $25 for two and $30 for three items. All are welcome. Attendees with large or heavy items are asked to bring a photograph instead of the item itself.
Event sponsors include Bonhams & Butterfields, which is donating its appraisal services. Additional event information can be found at www.focas-sandiego.org.
About Friends of County Animal Shelters
Friends of County Animal Shelters (FOCAS) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that has been at the forefront of finding a way to exit cats and dogs out of the three San Diego Department of Animal Services shelters and into safe, loving homes for the past 20 years. More than 5,000 San Diegans have adopted one or more FOCAS pets since 1999. FOCAS does not operate a shelter of its own but instead, relies on a network of foster parents and catteries to prepare cats and dogs for adoption into their forever home. The organization does not exit pets that will otherwise find a home quickly through the Department of Animal Services adoption program, but instead focuses on helping animals with friendly dispositions and treatable or manageable medical issues.
